Coalition Statement on House Proposal to Cut Federal STEM Investments

The U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies on Wednesday passed their FY2025 spending proposal, which included a 15% cut to the STEM Education Directorate at the National Science Foundation. James Brown, Executive Director of the STEM Education Coalition, published the following statement on behalf of the Coalition:

“We are extremely disappointed by the move in the House Appropriations Subcommittee to propose a 15% cut – amounting to $172 million – to the National Science Foundation’s STEM Education Directorate.  Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education programs at NSF are essential to our nation’s long-term competitiveness, workforce development, and economic prosperity.  They also provide vital support for efforts to better understand how best to provide more students from all background and regions of the country with a high quality education in these critical fields.   Our massive national commitment to the success of the CHIPS and Science Act in creating  strategic manufacturing capabilities here in the U.S. will ultimately fail if we don’t also invest aggressively in our own domestic STEM education pipeline.”
