STEM Champion Rep. Rush Holt to Retire
February 20: Earlier this week, Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) announced that we will not be seeking re-election to his seat in the U. S. House this fall. Holt, who was first elected in 1998, has been an outspoken champion for STEM education during his entire tenure in Congress. The STEM Education Coalition has worked closely with Rep. Holt on many, many issues over the years. Rep. Holt – or simply Rush, as he is known to many in the STEM community — has been a longstanding proponent of elevating the role science in the K-12 accountability system originally established by the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002 and has been a central figure in debates over education spending priorities. He has also been and incredibly vocal and effective champion on the Hill for the Math and Science Partnerships program at the U.S. Department of Education, one of our Coalition’s top appropriations priorities. He will be missed.
