Sign on Letter Thanking Holt and Obey for MSP Funding; NSB Expert Panel August 24-25;NAE Sept. 8 release of Engineering in K-12 Education

Three items for your consideration today.
1. This is last call to sign on to the THANK YOU letter to Reps Obey and Holt for their support of $5 million increase for the Dept. of Ed Math and Science Partnerships. If your organization would like to sign on to this letter please let James or I know by COB, Monday, August 24. The letter and current signatories is attached.
This letter thanks Rep Rush Holt and Chairman Obey for the amendment to increase the Math and Science Partnership program funding by $5 million, which was included in the final bill and did pass the House. Rep. Vernon Ehlers was also instrumental in this development.
2. Attached please find information the the National Science Board Expert Panel Discussion on Preparing the Next Generation of STEM Innovators, scheduled for this Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 24 and 25 at the National Science Foundation headquarters in Arlington. This is first come first serve seating.

Dear Colleague:
On September 8, the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council’s Center for Education will release a new report, Engineering in K-12 Education: Understanding the Status and Improving the Prospects, at a public symposium in Washington, D.C. Irwin Jacobs, co-founder, current board member and retired CEO & Chairman of Qualcomm, Inc. will deliver the keynote address.
Engineering has been the silent “E” in discussions of the importance of K-12 STEM education in the United States, which have tended to focus on the need to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. The report finds that a growing number of K-12 students are experiencing the open-ended, problem-solving process of engineering design. And data suggest these experiences can improve student interest and achievement in science and mathematics, increase awareness of engineering and the work of engineers, boost interest in pursuing engineering as a career, and increase technological literacy. This has implications not only for the future quality of STEM education, but also for the nation’s capacity to grow a workforce that can address the many technological challenges we face.
