STEM Education Coalition Praises House Action to Fund Key ESSA Program to Support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education

The STEM Education Coalition issued the following statement on this week’s action by the House Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee bill to fund the Department of Education and the nation’s new education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA):

“We are pleased with the House Subcommittee’s funding level of $1 billion for the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grant program, Title IV, Part A of ESSA.  Although the proposed funding is still below the amount authorized by Congress last December, the House has moved the discussion about funding this critical element of our nation’s new K-12 education law a long way in the right direction.  With this appropriation, thousands of schools districts across the country would – for the first time –  have access to new federal resources for activities like science, technology, engineering, and math competitions, hands-on and field-based learning, and bringing high-quality STEM courses – including computer science – to high-need schools.”
