On September 25, President Donald Trump released a Presidential Memorandum for the Secretary of Education. The memo recognizes the importance of STEM skills in the workforce and emphasizes the lack of nationwide access to high-quality STEM learning.

Two education organizations have released early analyses of state education plans under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The reports focus on how states are utilizing new authorities under ESSA to prioritize STEM education in their plans.

On June 23, the STEM Education Coalition expressed strong concerns to the Department of Education (ED) that the first round of ED feedback sent to Delaware was widely viewed as discouraging states from including science in their state accountability systems under the Every Student Succeeds Act.

The National Academy of Engineering and National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a reported titled Building America’s Skilled Technical Workforce. 

The STEM Education Coalition co-signed a letter to President Trump urging him to nominate highly-qualified individuals to serve in the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

This morning, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce favorably reported H.R. 2353, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act to the whole House of Representatives.

On May 10, the STEM Education Coalition Policy Forum hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill. The briefing, entitled “STEM 101: Major Policy Issues for the 115th Congress,” featured expert panelists Dr. David Evans of the National Science Teachers Association, Allyson Knox of Microsoft, Dr. Norman Fortenberry of the American Society for Engineering Education, Domenic Giandomenico of Project Lead the Way, Erik Peterson of the Afterschool Alliance, and James Brown of the STEM Education Coalition.

The Department of Education (ED) issued a seven-page memo detailing potential ways to use federal formula grant funds to support STEM education.  

The STEM Education Coalition has issued a statement on President Trump’s proposed FY2018 budget.

On March 15, the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies held a hearing entitled, “STEM Education: Preparing Students for the Careers of Today and the Future”.

The STEM Education Coalition is very pleased that President Trump will sign a pair of bipartisan bills into law that will authorize NASA and the National Science Foundation to bolster their efforts to bring more women and girls into the critical science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.  

On March 13, the STEM Education Coalition sent letters to President Donald Trump and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

After Secretary-designate DeVos’ confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Education Committee, several senators submitted additional follow-up questions to be answered before her final confirmation vote.
